Are Pressure Points Street Worthy? What makes this possible?

There is an old saying "everybody want to go to heaven but no wants to be dead." This paraphrased quote is from the movie Marked for Death, and was said by villain Screwface. But it is very true. Everyone wants the instant result, but no one wants to do the work.

And to answer the question quickly is both yes and no. it depends on the training. Let's take a deeper look.

The martial arts studied today are very different that 100 years ago. And as dangerous as these time are in the western cultures, the cultures of Japan, China and Korea to name a few were far different,  The west is interested in big shinny object, like winning in sporting events. A hundred years ago this was not an option. It was about survival.  And the masters of old lived lives of conflict. Today things are not the same.

Are Pressure Points Street Worthy?

Also what the master of old knew, and what they taught changed.  They stopped teaching the concepts and philosophies of their arts and focused on techniques. That was what people wanted. Plus as the arts became mainstream and children began to be taught arts were watered down for safety.

Are Pressure Points Street Worthy? That depends on the practitioner and what they are training in. Pretty much all martial arts teach a reactionary system. This will make pressure point striking difficult.  Why? Because the attacker is leading the dance.

So why I am saying this now after 2 decades of Kyusho Jitsu? Because I did not realize the so many were practicing a reactionary system.  I have been training in a "preparatory" martial art system since 2001. Before I began my study of Kyusho Jitsu.

In a reactionary martial art you are taught "what to do." And that is very important. But you are not taught when to do it! And that is far more important! When you move "on time" you take the lead in the attack. Then because you understand "natural laws" you see patterns in movement, and this opens up the body for meridian strikes.

Are Pressure Points Street Worthy? - It is about learning

Martial arts is not a destination.  It is about continued learning.  Most martial art systems today have curriculum for about 5 years tops. After this there is nothing to teach. So why do I have people still training in my system 20 years later? Because it is based on the preparatory martial art, Kosho Ryu it is a study.

A study of natural laws and motion. It is not about techniques or Kata. However they are also taught. But not for the purpose of making Gods out of them. But rather for learning and study.

When you move on time [timing], and understand distance pressure points present themselves.  You learn to project the Octagon on the body and see the "zig zag" pattern of body motion. Then you see openings. Plus the study of the 2 types of vision. This helps the student understand and overcome "tunnel" vision which comes from the adrenaline rush of attack.

Are Pressure Points Street Worthy? - In Conclusion

Are Pressure Points Street Worthy? CONCLUSION

Now many will resist the idea their arts does not contain everything. If you look at Aikido as an example, which is a great art, what O'Sensei taught early in his life to students is different from what he taught later in his life.

Rather than choosing a certain period which he taught would it not be better to study it all?

What James Mitose taught in Hawaii in 1936 and beyond to men like William Chow and Thomas SH Young was not the same as he taught to Bruce Juchnik.

It is foolish to think that any martial artist knows all. But the study, the learning is what matters. Are Pressure Points Street Worthy? Well if you add some of the natural laws of Kosho Ryu to your training they certainly can be! Below I will give you a chance to get a free 5 Lesson Kosho Mini Course!

And thank you for taking time to read Are Pressure Points Street Worthy?

Pressure Point Self Defense. How to save your life through escaping.

* Pressure Point Self Defense

Pressure Point Self Defense. Save your life through escaping a bad situation quickly. This article is a little different than any I have written previously on self defense.

And this is because the times are very different. I hope you will continue to read to the end. I am sure you have noticed that the world has changed dramatically in the last decade.

And most of this change has not been for the better.

Our freedoms have been attacked and free speech has almost vanished in many places. But thankfully over the last few months many people have woken finally to see what is going on. But this is not about that, or what I call the death of the western culture.

And to my mind that is a good thing. However I am also sure you have noticed the increase in street violence. And just how many "crazies" there are walking around today who explode into violence just by seeing an American Flag T-shirt,  SO today I am going to discuss the learning of a skill for the streets, Pressure Point Self Defense, and how to save your life through escaping. So let's get into this.

Pressure Point Self Defense

Kyusho Jitsu or pressure point fighting is a great study. But it is an intellectual study that assumes a strong martial art background. And over the years more and more people have developed an interest. The problem is today most martial arts systems are sport based and do not properly address self defense needs. This is not true for all martial arts, however the methods of training are often very limited.

And the fact is today many martial arts are technique based. They train with techniques on a stationary opponent and believe this can be used on the streets based on their free sparring or Kumite. But kumite is SPORT. And only a fraction of the entire picture of what martial art, karate or any other systems should be about.  Waza or techniques, Kumite, Kata are all VERY IMPORTANT training aspects of the martial arts. But much is missing still.

Pressure Point Self Defense that works needs more.

Pressure Point Self Defense - other considerations

There are other things to consider today on the streets.  Your right to self defense is in great jeopardy. The fact that there are cameras everywhere tells you that you better be 100 percent right when defend yourself! This has been seen with charges against police officers who were defending themselves, but video is altered to make special interest groups happy.  In the USA you have a "legal system" not a "justice system" which means that some people are above the law.

In Mexico any street fight that brings the police means both parties go to jail.  Plus, and most important is the guy who is attacking you likely has friends waiting to step in and kick the hell out of you if you want a solid blow of any kind.

What is the solution? Learn the art of escape to enhance your pressure point study.

Art of Escape - Pressure Point Self Defense

Secrets of the Octagon

Most martial arts teach what to do in the event of an attack. Pressure point or Kyusho study teaches where to strike. What is missing is the "when." This is where Kosho Ryu, the art of escape comes in.

Martial Art today which are pretty much all technique based teach to react when you see an punch coming. Kosho teachings to respond as soon as you see movement.

And then to move based on the angles of the Octagon

The basic teaching here are to escape the situation with any contact happening. However you could depending on the circumstances make an easy pressure point strike to say ST-05 or LI-18 and cause a pressure point knockout.  Beginners Kosho Ryu study gives you these kinds of options. And this is all part of Pressure Point Self Defense.

Pressure Point Self Defense - In Conclusion

Pressure Point Self Defense CONCLUSION

The study of Kosho Ryu helps to make pressure points work effectively on the streets. Kosho is a complete martial art study and there is enough teaching to last a lifetime. It is a preparatory first art, reactionary second.

The majority of martial arts are only reactionary. Plus it is concepts based, not technique or Kata based. However it includes everything.

I am going to give you some options below that you can learn more about Kosho. This will include a free video to get you started.

Thank you for taking time to read Pressure Point Self Defense!

Why Kosho Ryu? What are the reasons for the passion?

* Why Kosho Ryu?

Why Kosho Ryu? What are the reasons for the passion? In this article I will explain the reasons for my change of focus. Please note I am NOT abandoning Kyusho Jitsu.

That being said however I have covered everything! The last 10 years especially I have been so focused on it I have been able to do this. Remember this is what I do for a living.

So why Kosho Ryu? What are the reasons for the passion? Because learning is for a lifetime, not a short time.

Why Kosho Ryu

First I must address I have been involved with Kosho Ryu study longer than Kyusho Jitsu. And thus this is not something new for me. My root art is Kul Sul Hapkido. However after 16 years of study there was just nothing left. Really there was nothing left to learn aside from a new Kata each years after about 10 years.  This was the main reason I left my teacher and opened up my own Dojo called Art Mason's Peaceful Warriors Martial Arts Institute. And I am very happy I did this. Almost immediately upon opening we began the journey of learning.

The first part of our expansion of learning was with Grand Master Mark Shuey and Cane Masters. Because of this, and the joining of the World Budo Alliance I met Shidoshi Richard Buchan in late 2000 and began my Kosho Ryu journey. So in late 2000 we setup our first seminar with Shidoshi Buchan. From there it expanded and became a monthly study. Travelling to Toronto, or him coming to Windsor. I have lost contact with Shidoshi over the years. But thus is life.

However it influenced everything we did. And the study, and it is a study, is endless. Kosho Shorei Ryu us a COMPLETE martial art. This means there is always more to learn. And because of this it is a way of life also!  I study everyday and learn something new each day. Plus I can train this very easily in real life. Even in these strange days we are living today.

Hon Sang Mu Sa Hapkido

Kosho Ryu had such a heavy influence on what we did on the floor that I ended up founding my own system. This is called Hon Sang Mu Sa Hapkido. And KOSHO was heavy influence. Yes I taught Kyusho, but as a separate entity for the most part to my Black Belts.  The name Hon Sang Mu Sa has 2 meanings, the 1st is "ancient spiritual warrior," however the second is "old pine tree" which is a reference to Kosho founder Kosho Busatsu. He by legend sat under a pine tree and became enlightened about martial arts movement and self defense.

Therefore what the true name of the art is Kosho Shorei Ryu Hapkido.  And this is what will be taught at my Wolf's Den Dojo in Romania.

I recall very well one Friday night sitting in Shidoshi's home with my son Curt and 2 of Shidoshi's senior students talking. One of them asked me, "what martial art do you study?" I replied "Hapkido." He then stated, "no your martial art is Kosho Ryu, your style is Hapkido." This never left me. And this was in 2001. In 2006 I founded and renames the hybrid art of Hon Sang mu Sa Hapkido.

Kosho Core Concepts

Therefore as part of my change of focus I am putting together a series of 12 courses called the Kosho Core Concepts Series for anyone who wishes to bring the study of the Octagon, the Natural Laws of Kosho Ryu to what they are currently doing. And if you study pressure points from me this fits right in!

Here is a short video from the Kosho Atemi Waza Course on Tuite

As I have view the Kyusho Jitsu out in the wild for the last 7 years especially I have seen many have problems getting clean knockouts and making different pressure points work. This is not a Kyusho problem but a training problem. And Kosho is the cure.

In Conclusion

Why Kosho Ryu? CONCLUSION

Over the years I have been teaching the basic Octagon Principles to Kyusho Jitsu students who wanted to learn why I have been so effective.

However today I have changed the direction and will teach ALL that I am learning about Kosho. And my teacher is Hanshi Juchnik. Right now this is via distant, but soon I will be working more directly.

I hope you consider joining me on this journey. And the Kosho Core Concepts Series is where to begin! Below I also have a FREE training video to get you started.

Making Kyusho Jitsu Work on the Street. What you need to know.

* Making Kyusho Jitsu Work on the Street

Making Kyusho Jitsu Work on the Street. What you need to know. I have been studying and teaching Kyusho Jitsu for over 2 decades now.  And I love every aspect of Kyusho Jitsu.

There are a lot of "naysayers" out in the wild who will violently proclaim Kyusho Jitsu is a scam and does not work in real life. And they are simply that, naysayers. They are welcome to their closed minded opinions. Their sloth that prevents learning.

And their opinions also are not my business.

Martial Art study in the 20th and 21st century has undergone a transformation. I call this transformation watering down. And this was done to fit what society wanted.  As an example when James Mitose was teaching in Hawaii at what he called the "International Self Defense Club" he taught techniques, not Kosho Ryu. And you will find that this is true for many of the masters of old. But only if you study the history of the martial arts.

Making Kyusho Jitsu Work on the Street

Making Kyusho Jitsu Work on the Street is the topic of this article, and linked to the relationship of what happened to the teachings of the arts.  Pressure Points exist in all martial arts. If you strike the body they MUST also be struck. When you strike a body you will always hit a pressure point. With over 361 on each side of the body it is impossible not to hit one.

However their teaching as been left out of the equation for decades. In my book the Complete Kyusho Jitsu Learning Guide from A to Z I address this issue of missing teachings.  I suggest getting a copy.

Today Kyusho Jitsu can be found in many places. And there are many teachers out there doing a great job of teaching the art. But there is something missing. Kyusho is an intellectual pursuit. And some of the demonstrations are excellent!

However the problem lies with application to the streets. And while I have addressed this in the past. I have been reluctant to get into this fully. The reason? Martial Artists have very fragile egos and are many times not interested in expanding their knowledge.

So, how do we change this to make Kyusho Jitsu truly effective on the street?

Making Kyusho Jitsu Work on the Street - Steps

The first step is to realize sport martial arts will not give you what you need. It has its place, but that place is a ring, not the streets. Next comes an understanding that you have learned what is called a "reactionary" martial art.  And that is a good thing! However the problem is that the masters of old taught WRONG on purpose, and never evolved the teachings from there. As I stated about Mitose Sensei taught techniques in Hawaii, not Kosho. This is the same thing.

You need to take your "reactionary first" system to a "preparatory" martial art first and reactionary second system. And one of the 1st principles of Kyusho Jitsu is Body Mechanics. Therefore the best answer to the issue is to learn Kosho Ryu and integrate it into everything you do. And Kosho is all about Body Mechanics, the natural laws of movement. ANd this is what makes Making Kyusho Jitsu Work on the Street!

Making Kyusho Jitsu Work on the Street - In Conclusion

Making Kyusho Jitsu Work on the Street CONCLUSION

The real purpose of study in the arts is to continue learning. The students I have taught in my Dojo years back found Kyusho Jitsu very easy to apply.

And this is because they study Kosho Ru from the beginning of their training because it is part of my root art .

If you want to take your martial art training to a NEW level I will give you some great options below! Making Kyusho Jitsu Work on the Street is something we all need to pursue!

Thank you for taking time to read Making Kyusho Jitsu Work on the Street.

Pressure Point LI-11. How to cause anxiety in an attacker?

* Pressure Point LI-11

Pressure Point LI-11: The final article in the series on the different pressure points of the body I conclude with Large Intestine 11.  I do suggest you read the article on the Large Intestine Meridian also.

This has been a great series to write and if you want more information on the pressure points of the body I suggest getting my book called Kyusho Pressure Point Anatomy.

This book breaks down each of the 361 pressure points on the body.

Pressure Point LI-11

Pressure Point LI-11 is with the elbow flexed, located in the depression at lateral the end of the transverse cubital crease. And also midway between LU-05 and the lateral epicondyle of the Humerus Bone. Plus on the radial aspect of the elbow at the origin of the extensor carpi radialis muscle. And the radial side of the brachioradialis muscle.

Hitting this pressure point can cause permanent damage to the elbow as it is located directly on the joint. A blow here also can weaken other joints on the body. When used in an aspect, this pressure point is used to calm the person down.  Attacking it can cause the opposite effect which is anxiety. This pressure point also can cause diarrhea and vomiting.

Very important to note is that LI-11 is is an Underlying Indicator Point.

Pressure Point LI-11 - In Conclusion

Pressure Point LI-11 CONCLUSION

I have really enjoyed doing this very long series. And I thank you for reading and sharing these articles with like minded friends.

If you prefer an online reference to all the pressure points on the body versus a book then checkout my Online Kyusho Jitsu Encyclopedia

Thank you for reading Pressure Point LI-11. This is a very important series, and I hope you will read them all!

No Touch Knockout Controversy. Why is there violent opposition?

* No Touch Knockout Controversy

No Touch Knockout Controversy: This is perhaps the most controversial subject in the martial arts, and the subject that has led to the ridicule of Grand Master George Dillman. And I myself have been attacked over the subject. But this is a waste of time as the opinion of others are meaningless to me, and I do not respond. So if you are a hatter of the the No Touch Knockout Controversy click on this link. It will save you some stress. I am not going to state it is real or it is not real in thus article.

I am only going to address the subject. You can decide for yourself beyond this.

Personally this subject is of little interest to me. My focus is on making things work on the street, not for show. And I honestly see no street application here. I am not saying it is not possible, just not plausible. I have written on book on the subject and 3 video courses. But this was from demand to learn, not my own interest. And my new book Complete Kyusho Jitsu Learning Guide includes this topic.

No Touch Knockout Controversy

So, how does this all work? First this was discovered by accident. And it does not work on everyone.  And from the work I have done on the subject is tied to the Chi levels of the Uke, and whether the aura defends itself when it feels attacked. I myself have not experienced being "no touched." But I am also hard to knockout to begin with.

And the basic no touch knockout is done by driving energy through the brain and the nervous system on an angle, and then splitting this energy. This causes the brain to become confused and a pass-out is often the result. Sometimes it can be just dizziness.

However caution is needed!

No Touch Knockout Controversy - Caution

Most important to note is that I have seen this phenomenon go bad in practice. The first time was a close friend and colleague who was ill afterwards for about 6 months. The reason was that other principles, sound and emotion were brought into play.

And the second ended up in respiratory failure and almost death. Now I am going to be honest. Believe what I am saying or not, it is up to you. I am NOT trying to convince anyone of anything.

And to my thinking this No Touch Knockout Controversy is unnecessary. Why? Because when I look at the world today, and the lack of people being open minded and are willing to look at a world of possibilities, I cannot be surprised so many attack the No Touch. Therefore an open minded person might dismiss it, because they have no interest.  But when something is attacked, then you know there is truth in what is being said. Life is best lived with an open mind.

In Conclusion

No Touch Knockout Controversy CONCLUSION

Most of all, as I have said if you are interested, then you can pursue the teaching from me or another. If not that is cool also.

Therefore remember, as Shakespeare wrote in Hamlet "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy."

It is always good to study and research into things you do not understand.

When your mind is open to possibility, your world becomes far more meaningful.

Pressure Point SI-08. What makes this point tick?

* Pressure Point SI-08

Pressure Point SI-08: Today I am going to look at a powerful pressure point of the arms which is SI-08.

Also checkout my article on the Small Intestine Meridian.

If you are interested in a reference to all 361 Pressure Point on the body, plus the Extraordinary Pressure Points take a look at my book Kyusho Pressure Point Anatomy

Pressure Point SI-08

Pressure Point SI-08 is located with the elbow flexed,

Pressure Point SI-08 is located between the olecranon of the ulna bone and the medial epicondyle of the Humerus BoneThis is a very dangerous pressure point to strike. And aside from the fact that it will cause considerable pain and Chi drainage, if struck at the same time as Pressure Point LU-05. Very important to note it will cause a knock out or even possible death.

Pressure Point SI-08 is also an Underlying Indicator Point. You should read this article also as it is very informative about these special pressure points.

In Kyusho Jitsu learning the more you know, the more you know. Some of these pressure point featured in this articles you might never use. But, being this one is located on the arms, and the arms always present themselves this is excellent knowledge.

Pressure Point SI-08 - In Conclusion

Pressure Point SI-08 CONCLUSION

I hope you have been enjoying this series on the different pressure points of the body.

And I cannot do them all, and I have already done so in my book Kyusho Pressure Point Anatomy.

Therefore I am not sure I will do anymore in this series, however time will tell. Also checkout my Free 10 Lesson Kyusho Jitsu Mini Course if you have a minute more.  Thank for reading about Pressure Point SI-08.

Pressure Point BL-13. Another Important Alarm Point.

* Pressure Point BL-13

Pressure Point BL-13: Today I am looking at a very important pressure point which is Associated Alarm Point BL-13. Also check my article on the Bladder Meridian. And also Associated Alarm Points

Pressure Point BL-13

Pressure Point BL-13 is found 1.5 cun lateral to the lower border of the 3rd thoracic vertebra. Most of all this is a very dangerous pressure point as it is the Associated Alarm Point for the Lungs.

Associated Alarm Points, which are all found on the Bladder Meridian on the right side of the body, are extremely dangerous as they relate directly to the neurological aspect of the organ they represent. Most of all Striking this pressure point will cause a knockout, breathing issues and potentially shut off the Lungs resulting in death.

Thus I strongly suggest you read my article on Kyusho Resuscitation and take my Kyusho Jitsu Chi Resuscitation Certification Course. And I have always taught resuscitation in depth in my Kyusho study groups. But the issue with students today is they learn something and believe there is no need for further study.

Very important to note this idea is very wrong. Memorization is NOT learning. Yes it is part of the learning path however training in the learning, refreshing the information, and focus are major elements also.

Pressure Point BL-13 - In Conclusion

Pressure Point BL-13 CONCLUSION

So I was asked recently what the protocol for reverse CPR was. And perhaps this former student should have paid attention in class then he would know it.

Thus when it comes to dangerous pressure points like Pressure Point BL-13 not knowing your stuff is negligent period.

Therefore I did not answer his question. It was asked in a very snide way. I have no patience for these kinds of people any longer.  Thank you or taking time to read this article on Pressure Point BL-13.

How to Properly learn Kyusho Jitsu? What is the best method?

* Properly learn Kyusho Jitsu

How to Properly learn Kyusho Jitsu? What is the best method? Is there a best method? In this article I will discuss this in detail for you today. I have been teaching the martial arts a very long time.

That began in about 1986 as a helper and progressed to me opening my own Dojo called Art Mason's Peaceful Warriors Martial Arts in 2000. And I know from much study on the subject there is a best method to teaching anything.

And Kyusho Jitsu is no exception!

Thus if you want to properly learn Kyusho Jitsu there is a path. And the closer you stick to this path the better you will do.

And this is true for teaching Kyusho also. Important to note one of the issues we have in the martial arts world is instructors taking short cuts because one method worked best for them.

Properly learn Kyusho Jitsu

Because something works for me does not mean it will work for you! However when you make teaching martial arts a career you should be properly studying the best methods of teaching, based on how well your students perform. And not what works for you. Most of all I started teaching Kyusho in Dojo, as a certified teacher in about 2005. And back in 2009 I was the most qualified teacher in Canada aside from my teacher Grand Master Stewart.

So I have the experience to talk about this. And I do this full time. So what is this path when it comes to Kyusho Jitsu? Back in 2017 I released a video course called the Kyusho Jitsu Level One Instructor Certification Course.

And this is the novice course and it lays out what to do and teach step by step and month by month!

How to Properly learn Kyusho Jitsu? - Here is an example:

  • What is a Pressure Point? Detailed teaching on question.
  • What is the area of activation?
  • What is the correct angle and direction of striking?
  • And the list continues

Therefore you do not need to jump around into specific pressure points and locations. Start here and build on the teaching. Like properly laying a foundation for a building.

Complete Kyusho Jitsu Learning Guide from A to Z

With that in mind, and realizing not everyone can or will spend money on a certification course I decided to write a book called the Complete Kyusho Jitsu Learning Guide from A to Z.  This book is a step by teaching / learning guide to help anyone from beginner to master levels either learn or teach Kyusho Jitsu.

And I am positive there is no other book out there like this. Most importantly it is like page numbers. And it starts exactly where the student should start and moves step by step forward. Most of all it does not just reference points, it teaches the content in a concise plain speaking manner.

Have a read from the link provided above if you have a moment.

How to Properly learn Kyusho Jitsu? - In Conclusion

Properly learn Kyusho Jitsu CONCLUSION

The art of teaching is like so many things vanishing today. Teaching is not indoctrination, but rather an experience of discover for the student.

And like what was once real science you look for things that work, not paid results.

Thank you for taking time to read the article How to Properly learn Kyusho Jitsu. It is very much appreciated!

Pressure Point ST-17. How to cause memory loss!

* Pressure Point ST-17

Pressure Point ST-17: Today I will add another to the long list of the breakdowns of important pressure points for self defense with Pressure Point ST-17. I do suggest you also read the article on the Stomach Meridian

So now let's get down to it and have a look!

Pressure Point ST-17

This pressure point’s location is the middle of the nipple in the 4th intercostal space. So locating the pressure point is not really very difficult.

Pressure Point ST-17 And this is one nasty pressure point. Most of all it does require a “dead on” strike with medium to hard force. And surprisingly this can cause death. And this pressure point is also never needled in acupuncture for the same reason.

Very important to note that upon striking, a sensation moves up the neck on the side attacked with unconsciousness following shortly after. This sensation moves into the head before the knockout happens. And Pressure Point ST-17 is also know to cause a loss of memory.

Please do not play with this pressure point! Martial Artists, especially Kyusho Jitsu people have been know to take risks. It is not your life you are playing with but the life of the Uke. And believe me, none of us are as talented as we like to believe. I have seen many bad knockouts that resulted in illness in the Uke.

Pressure Point ST-17 - In Conclusion

Pressure Point ST-17 CONCLUSION

I give this article to the public for educational purposes. I hope everyone reading has enough common sense to know that striking an Uke will have results.

I know of one who was ill for months after a strike. And there was no reason for this either!

Also make sure before you work with Kyusho Jitsu Pressure Points you understand the art of Resuscitation

Thank you for reading Pressure Point ST-17!
