Pressure Point Self Defense & Threat Levels

Self Defense is Under Attack

Pressure Point Self Defense & Threat Levels

Do you know how Pressure Point Self Defense & Threat Levels integrate together? From the things I see posted, and a lot of the video I see there seems to be some confusion on this topic.

Today I see a lot of "Combat" websites, videos and posts. Many of these done by younger people, often times trying to make a name for themselves. Nothing wrong with that I suppose. However if you are experiencing the need for "combat" training and you are a citizen, not police or military, you are doing something VERY wrong!

The addition of the science of pressure point self defense into these systems would dramatically improve the success rate. But again if you are confronted by a knife on a regular basis, it is time to rethink your life.

Pressure Point Self Defense & Threat Levels

You can breakdown Threat Levels for the average person fairly accurately. And in my opinion the need for real, solid self defense solutions are needed more than ever!

But first let's define self defense.

Self-Defense

The protection of one's person or property against some injury attempted by another. This is a legal definition and here is a link for more information for you.

Escalation Levels

For the sake of simplicity I am going to break down Threat Level into 3 parts. In my school I break it down further, but lets look at the things the average person will encounter.

1) Level One - This is the beginning stage. You have encounter a disruptive person or a situation in which a potential attacker is "interviewing" you. Under most circumstances there is always an interview. For those types of people who are into the conflict and combat types of situation this may not occur. Or occurred in the past. Then they are ambushed. That is not what happens to the average person.

This stage has distinct signs and it requires situational awareness. There are also certain skills needed to handle this stage. Good assertive verbal skills, knowledge of the area in which you are in and possible escape routes. But most of all, an understanding of how to preemptively use pressure points to discourage the attacker, subdue the attacker and possibly restrain the attacker till the police arrive.

2) Level Two -. This is in reference to AFTER the attacker has taken the threat from talk to physical aggression. This includes all of the above, plus the ability to knock the attacker out, allowing for escape or intervention from authorities.

3) Level Three - This is high level threats that include weapons like knife, guns and clubs. Also multiple attackers!

H.P.P.T Humane Pressure Point Tactics

What is H.P.P.T Humane Pressure Point Tactics? "Is this something I need?" This is a question I have been getting asked all week, so lets take a good look at exactly what this is all about.

Let's do an FAQ on H.P.P.T Humane Pressure Point Tactics!

Question # 1

Who is this series of courses for?

Answer: This is for any martial arts student or instructor who is concerned about the effectiveness of the self defense aspects of their martial art system. The escalation of violence across the globe is reason for this concern. Today violence erupts over NOTHING.

Question # 2

Is this only for Kyusho Jitsu Students?

Answer: No, this course includes real working techniques that anyone can learn and apply to self defense. This is not a "Kyusho Jitsu" class. We will not be talking about "Kyusho Principles" or other related topics. This is a different ballgame. We will use pressure points, however the focus is different.

Question # 3

Can I teach after I certify?

Answer: Yes! I encourage you to do this! The contents of this course can be integrated into you current martial arts system. Or you can teach special interest groups like social workers, police or anyone else you think could benefit from the information!

Question # 4

What does the first course cover?

Answer: The Level One Course covers situations which have not "yet" escalated to violence. However there is a good possibility that they will! Therefore preemptive action is required! As an example if you strike someone preemptively you can end up on assault charges. Why? Because technically you started it! Legally also. This will keep you on the right side of the law, but allowing you to handle the threat effectively.

The idea behind H.P.P.T Humane Pressure Point Tactics is to take control, without excessive force and end the threat. This could be by removing the person from the area as an example.

Question # 5

Can you show examples of the kind of things you will teach?

Answer: Yes I can. Below is a video from 2012 of an H.P.P.T Humane Pressure Point Tactics certification I did in my school in Canada.  Now remember this is excerpts, so you see examples, but there is a lot of information missing in this video that will NOT be missing in the course!

Humane Pressure Point Self Defense

What are Humane Pressure Point Self Defense [tactics] and why is it so important for martial artists to learn and understand these? First I want to address any controversy you have read about over time.

Kyusho Jitsu or pressure point fighting has been criticized as being not effective and criticized by many, many "expert" martial artists who are simply too "closed minded, stupid or lazy" to do the study.  If I punch you in the face it is going to HURT. If I alter the method slightly and hit you in the face where a nerve is closer to the surface or more exposed it will hurt a LOT MORE. Pressure Points when studied and applied correctly WORK. I find these types of people laughable at best.

Back in 2009 I completed the HPPT Courses with Grand Master Steve Stewart that certified me as a Level Three Humane Pressure Point Tactics Instructor. There were only 3 levels to the course. Today the certification patch is still on my Gi also. It was a great course!

What is this for?

The main idea is to be able to take complete control of a bad situation, before it turns to violence. The course is perfect to teach anyone in a position of deal with the public where problem can arise. [Bars, security, high school teachers, medical etc]. In fact I did a course years ago for ambulance attendants.

It is also excellent for police as it helps them control a situation without needing to use a taser or "billy" stick. Below is a short video example of a Humane Pressure Point Self Defense Tactic.

Why is this Important?

Why is Humane Pressure Points, or Humane Kyusho Jitsu as I usually call it so very important to the average martial artist? Now you can argue for a "moral" responsibility, but that one for me kind of falls on deaf ears. People make choices, and attacking someone is a choice.

However there are very important legal concerns. Here is an accepted Legal Definition of Self Defense. Our concern as martial artists is that we comply with this definition because we live in a "legal" system and not a "justice" system. Therefore we must use "reasonable force" at all times!

If we do not, then it could very well be us on assault charges or worse. And a trained martial artist will get very little sympathy from a jury.

Surveillance World

Today there is surveillance everywhere! I cannot think of any place you can really go in a city without someone seeing what is going on. They are also videoing it, but this rarely shows the true picture. If someone attacks you, and their buddy or girlfriend is there, and you "overdue" the defense, this can go bad fast!

Self Defense and Cameras everywhere!

Self Defense and Cameras everywhere!

Therefore the need of Humane Kyusho Jitsu.

Humane Pressure Point Self Defense of Humane Kyusho Jitsu, whichever term you prefer will allow you to handle a BAD situation before it escalates to a seriously violent end.  Here are a few example of times when this knowledge could really help you.

  1. The drunk brother in law who is sure he can take you.
  2. The guy in the bar who believes you are looking at his girlfriend
  3. A client or someone who becomes angry and the situation gets out of hand.

The list goes on and on! I am sure you can think of dozens of such example. Plus on a video, it looks as if you are defending yourself. And not attacking! I had one such situation years ago in  bar in Windsor where a guy who knew who i was had a "few too many" and needed to be "calmed."  Had I reacted with too much force this would have gone bad, FAST!

Learning these skills

Humane Kyusho Jitsu Companion Video

Humane Kyusho Jitsu

I cannot overemphasize how important these skills are to develop. They are all "pain pressure point" based and work very well. As you can see from the video above, that "Come along" really hurts when done correctly.

And it is easy to apply too! There are so some verbal skills you need to learn also. This helps with control but also helps make you case if the altercation goes to court.

I have written an eBook on the subject of Humane Kyusho Jitsu and also have a very solid video on the topic. You an check both of these out from the links below!

I almost forgot too! If you want to learn more about Humane Pressure Point Self Defense there is an article from Black Belt Magazine you can look at right here. Always remember success in a self defense situation gets down to many different things. All knowledge must be applied, which means you can just read it or watch it. You gotta do the work and train it!
